Miami Dade County’s Census Complete Count Committee hosting series of Haitian-American census awareness efforts

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County’s Census 2010 Complete Count Committee along with Miami-Dade Health Department, Florida International University (FIU) Immigration Clinic, South Florida Workforce, Emergency Management Agency International and the U.S. Census Bureau will host a Haitian Census Awareness Weekend starting on Friday, March 26th from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Little Haiti Health Center (Census Informational Session) and on Saturday March 27th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Edison Little River Community Center in Little Haiti (Resource Fair).

The Community will be able to receive a host of County Services and assistance for immigration and TPS Service, legal aid, South Florida Workforce, Small Business Development, transit, and much more. An informational session will also be held in City of Homestead at the Emergency Management Agency, International,139 S.W. 1st Avenue, Homestead. The events and activities focus is to encourage persons to complete the forms and be counted.

The Office of the Mayor’s Haitian Liaison, Nadia Pierre, along with the Committee’s Co-Chair Mayor Andre D. Pierre have actively been engaging the Haitian Community to participate in Census 2010.

“It is important that our residents realize the importance of the census in order for us to achieve an accurate count in 2010” explains North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre, “this is our only chance in ten years to make an impact on the future of our diverse community by securing our fair share of resources to serve our residents.”

The Census is completed every 10 years, the Census affects political representation and directs the allocation of $400 billion of dollars in federal funding for distribution of the states and local communities. Census forms were mailed to all households starting on March 15th asking people to answer 10 questions that will take only 10 minutes to complete.
