Miami-Dade County to Vote on Resolution in Support of Immigration Relief Programs

Miami-Dade, the largest county in Florida, would become the first to pass this sort of resolution, following the example of cities like Kissimmee, North Miami and Tampa

MIAMI – On Tuesday, June 2nd, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners will vote on a resolution in support of immigration relief programs DAPA and DACA created by President Obama’s Executive Action. The vote is likely to happen during the Commission Board Meeting.

The program known as DAPA (Deferred Action for Parental Accountability) to temporarily stop the deportation of parents of U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents, was expected to be implemented on May 20th; and the expansion of the program known as DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), to protect immigrants who came to the country at a young age, was expected to start on February this year. These programs could potentially benefit approximately 253,000 Floridians.

On May 19th, Commission Chairman Jean Monestime directed the County Attorney to draft a resolution after a delegation of immigrant families and advocates presented their request at the Commission Board meeting. 55,000 of the potential beneficiaries live in Miami-Dade alone.

Miami-Dade will be the first county to pass this sort of resolution, even though it’s not the first local government to publicly come out in support of immigrant families. In April, North Miami and Tampa signed an Amicus Brief in support of Administrative Relief for millions of immigrant families. After that, the city of Kissimmee passed a similar resolution in support.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition and its members will continue inviting Floridians from all over the state took action by calling and emailing local elected officials in other counties and cities, with the same ask.
