Miami-Dade Commissioner honored by Caribbean-American owned law firm

MIAMI – The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC) and delancyhill law firm welcomed over 500 patrons to celebrate Black History Month with a presentation of the Langston Hughes Project, Ask Your Mama, Twelve Moods for Jazz on Thursday, February 23. The evening featured a VIP reception honoring Miami-Dade County Commissioner Dennis C. Moss and the Dr. Ron McCurdy Quartet with celebrity spoken word artist Malcolm Jamal-Warner. Proceeds of the Celebration benefitted the SMDCAC’s education and outreach programs.

The evening also welcomed a number of Miami Dade County elected officials and administrators, including Miami-Dade Commissioner Barbara Jordan, Florida City Mayor Otis Wallace, Palmetto Bay Mayor Shelley Stancyzk, Palmetto Bay Councilman Howard Teindrich, Cutler Bay Councilwoman Sue Ellen Loyzelle, Miami-Dade Deputy Mayor Russell Beneby, and Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) executive Ginny Gutierrez.

In addition to an official County proclamation for the occasion, the GMCVB and Schnelby Winery & Brewery, and Frank C. Martin K-8 International Academy presented Commissioner Moss with special recognitions for his leadership and advocacy on behalf of the residents of South Miami-Dade County.

“For me, it has always been and will always be about being a public servant and catering to the needs of our residents. It is a calling,” stated Commissioner Dennis Moss.

The Celebration was a culmination of partnering business and organizations, including, but not limited to the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Young Professional Network of Miami (Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce), Bilmor with Advertising Specialties, Caribbean Bar Association, Community Bank of Florida, and Mercedes Benz of Cutler Bay.

Dr. Ron McCurdy and Malcolm-Jamal Warner revived the life’s work of Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes with a dazzling multimedia presentation of jazz and spoken word poetry on the main stage.

“We were proud to present this historic opportunity for the residents to celebrate the work of Commissioner Moss and to revel in the cultural treasures of Langston Hughes at the brand new South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.
