Miami-Dade Commissioner Barbara Jordan and Consul Generals Celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month
MIAMI – Standing before hundreds of countrymen from island nations, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Barbara Jordan recently paid tribute to attendees during National Caribbean American Heritage Month. Now in its seventh year, Caribbean American Heritage Month has been a nationwide effort to celebrate the contributions of Caribbean Americans to the United States.
“The strength of Miami-Dade County is its culturally diverse communities,” said Commissioner Jordan. “We are fortunate to have Jamaicans, Trinidadians, Bahamians, Haitians and others from the Caribbean who call South Florida home.
Commissioner Jordan brings greetings to attendees of the Caribbean American Heritage Month celebration at the Stephen P. Clark Center.
“These individuals bring a wealth of knowledge to our region,” added Jordan. “Some are renowned music composers, legendary sports figures, great literary artists, distinguished physicians, and record-breaking aviators.”
On hand to celebrate the occasion were dignitaries from several countries including the Consul General of Jamaica, Sandra Grant-Griffiths; Consul General of Saint Lucia, Kent Hippolyte; Consul General of The Bahamas, Rhoda Jackson; and, Consul General of Suriname, Rita Schavet. The event, held at the Stephen P. Clark Center, was co-sponsored by the Miami-Dade County Black Affairs Advisory Board.
