Miami-Dade commemorate the one year anniversary of Haiti’s 2010 earthquake

MIAMI – On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti near Port-au-Prince, leaving hundreds of thousands dead and even more homeless. One year later, Miami-Dade County officials will be taking part of several events to mourn the earthquake victims and honor those who lent a helping hand during a time of crisis. Residents are invited and encouraged to take part in these ceremonies:

Tuesday, January 11, 2011 from 7 p.m. – 12 a.m.

The remembrances begin with a “Veillée Patriotique” (Interfaith Service) hosted by the January 12th Taskforce Committee at the Manno Sanon Stadium at Little Haiti Park, 6301 NE 2nd Avenue. The service will feature a spiritual revival, personal accounts by victims, and powerful performances by various artists.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 starting at 9 a.m.

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jean Monestime, District 2, will recognize several County agencies that were instrumental in providing critical assistance to earthquake victims. The event will take place in Commission Chambers at the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st Street, Second Floor. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) Assistant Chief Karls Paul-Noel and the MDFR Urban Search and Rescue Team will also be recognized for their indispensable labor in the aftermath of the natural disaster. Assistant Chief Paul-Noel, who was named one of the World’s Most Influential People in 2010 by Time magazine, will be recognized for his heroic actions following the Haiti earthquake.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 11 a.m.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, in collaboration with Ayiti History and Resources and the Haitian American Emergency Relief Committee, will welcome members of the public to the opening ceremony of the Sixth Annual Haitian Independence Month Celebration in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW 1st Street. The ceremony will feature a visual montage highlighting Haitian history, and a day of remembrance on the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake. Participants will include Dr. Michelle Dodard from the U.M.Global Institute / Project Medishare, former Miami Heat player Alonzo Mourning, Artist Carl Craig and Calvin Hughes, WPLG Channel 10 News.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011, from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

A “Haiti Earthquake Remembrance Vigil” will be held in North Miami at the MOCA Plaza, located at 770 NE 125 Street. The vigil is hosted by North Miami Mayor Andre D. Pierre and the Haitian American Pastors United for Greater Impact and will feature an interfaith service and a moment of silence at 4:53 p.m., the time when the earthquake struck. Across the plaza, the Museum of Contemporary Art will be open until 9 p.m. MOCA’s current exhibition features 150 extraordinary photographs and films of Miami’s Haitian community by celebrated photographer Bruce Weber that were taken over the last seven years.

Wednesday, January 12, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

City of Miami Commissioner Richard P. Dunn II and the Little Haiti Cultural Center will host an evening of remembrance at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, 260 NE 59 Terrace. The event will feature live performances and the viewing of “Bound by Haiti,” a documentary by filmmakers who experienced the earthquake and its aftermath. Wednesday, January 12, 2011 from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Rapha Family Services in partnership with the Association of Haitian Social Workers, Potential Release Ministries International, Association of Exchange and Development of Activities and Partnership, Inc. (AEDAP), and Union des Jeunes Samaritain (UJSAMAT) will host “Memorializing the Lost and Celebrating the Life of the Survivors of the Earthquake.” The event will take place at Shalom Community Church, 900 NE 131st Street.
