Miami Dade College (MDC) to Host Census Meeting for Faith-Based Leaders

MIAMI – Since last fall, Miami Dade College (MDC) has been actively involved in the public awareness efforts for the 2010 Census by spreading the word, posting important information on its website, sending emails to faculty, staff and students, and training its students for the Census speakers’ bureau, among other activities.

Now, MDC will join Miami-Dade County and U.S. Census officials to host an important meeting of faith-based leaders on Friday, March 19, 2010, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., at its newly opened North Campus Science Complex (11380 NW 27th Ave., North Miami). Light refreshments will be served and the official program will start at 9:30 a.m. The important role of the faith-based community will be discussed among other related topics. In fact, the weekend of March 19 – 21 is Faith-Based Census Awareness Weekend.

This year, the U.S. Census will define who we are as a nation. Completed every 10 years, the Census affects political representation and directs the allocation of billions of dollars in funding for local communities. Census forms are being mailed in the coming days containing 10 questions, which take about 10 minutes to complete. For more information, please visit http://www.miamidade.gov/census2010/.

The facility being used for the upcoming faith-based leaders meeting is an ideal venue for the sharing of ideas and plans. MDC inaugurated its new Science Complex in January which is comprised of a 90,000-square-foot facility featuring 21 laboratories with media stations, state-of-the-art classrooms, a roof-top observatory, a lecture hall, faculty and administrative offices, a botanical garden, a palmetum, greenhouse, outdoor plaza, and cafe. It was designed with the latest technology in the scientific industry to provide an exceptional learning environment and opportunities for science majors. It will serve as a hands-on training ground for students interested in biotechnology, chemical technology, environmental sciences, and advanced manufacturing, among many other science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. The Science Complex is also a top regional research facility.
