MIAMI-DADE –  Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho announced a coordinated effort of the District’s employees and students to support relief efforts to Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, led by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Miami and Father Reginald “Reggie” Jean-Mary of Notre Dame D’Haiti Catholic Church.

“The people of Haiti are an integral part of our global community, they are our brothers and sisters,” said Superintendent Carvalho, announcing the plan at Notre Dame D’Haiti’s Sunday morning mass. “In the span of less than ten years, they have been devastated by multiple natural disasters. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is pleased to once again partner with Father Reggie and Catholic Charities, mobilizing our resources, partnerships, and influence to extend aid to the island nation and help the people of Haiti rebuild.”

Collections will start on Tuesday, Oct. 11.  All information about the effort can be found at www.dadeschools.net and giveourstudentstheworld.org.

Employees and students are encouraged to support relief efforts by contributing baby food, dry food, medical supplies, hygiene products, batteries, flashlights, school bags, and school supplies, as well as monetary donations.

Hurricane Matthew devastated the southwestern peninsula of Haiti on Oct.4, 2016, flattening homes, flooding villages, razing crops, sweeping away cattle, and cutting off parts of the island.

Reports indicate that nearly 900 people lost their lives and 350,000 are in need of assistance. According to UNICEF, Haiti is facing the largest humanitarian crisis since its 2010 earthquake.

Public health officials fear the lack of clean water, food, and shelter could exacerbate the country’s cholera epidemic.

M-DCPS previously partnered with Father Reggie in providing assistance to Haiti following extensive hurricane-related flooding in 2008 and after a massive earthquake in 2010.

Anyone who wishes to make a monetary contribution to the relief efforts is welcome to do so at www.dadeschools.net and giveourstudentstheworld.org.
