LAUDERHILL – When John T. Hodgson arrived in South Florida from Jamaica 45 years ago, he had little experience in radio. Today, he is the longest serving host on WAVS 1170 AM, the region’s most popular West Indian station.
Known throughout South Florida as John T, he celebrated his 40th year as a host on the Davie-based company on July 14. From 7 am to 10 am Mondays to Fridays, his voice anchors The Morning Ride With John T.
It is a significant milestone for John T, a former police officer who served the Jamaican constabulary for 13 years. He is also a Broward County commissioner.
“I am grateful! I am honored and appreciative of all those who have supported me over the years. My captured audience has remained with my program over the years as well as new additions,” said John T in an interview with South Florida Caribbean News. “Transitioning from one age group to another, and the inclusion of different formats has kept me relevant.”
The Morning Ride With John T started as a music program. It has expanded to discussions on current affairs, which includes issues affecting South Florida’s Caribbean community.
That evolution, he noted, has made him a more rounded broadcaster.
“When I started out I was just a DJ, just playing music. But presenting a program isn’t just music. It’s entertainment and information,” said John T. “I went on to study broadcasting. So, I went from just playing music to informing the public about relevant issues — news, sports, traffic, weather.”
WAVS was a Spanish-owned station when he got his first gig there. That was as host of the weekly Saturday Parade which featured West Indian and American soul music.
Prior to joining WAVS, he hosted a gospel show on 1520 FM.
In November, 2024, John T was elected to the Broward County Commission representing Lauderhill.
As he celebrates a personal landmark, he hails those who supported him over the years.
“The businesses, event promoters, and my audience have benefited tremendously from advertising on my program over the years. The ones who have run their ads and supported us deserve recognition as part of this 40-year journey,” said John T.
