JN FOUNDATION LAUNCHES ITS SOCIAL ENTERPRISE BOOST INITIATIVE

Washington, DC – The philanthropic arm of the Jamaica National Building Society has launched its Social Enterprise Boost Initiative (SEBI), in co-operation with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

SEBI, a three-year initiative of the JN Foundation, has been established to create dynamic and empowering opportunities for Jamaica’s social enterprises, namely those organisations which are committed to the development and sustainability of the social and economic well-being of communities, groups and individuals. These enterprises will be assisted by SEBI to become significant contributors to national growth.

Saffrey Brown, General Manager, JN Foundation, stated that “the launch of SEBI is timely as Jamaica, like other small developing states have many social challenges which cannot be addressed solely by the Government. Also there are many organisations operating within the social sector that must move from non-sustainable entities to profitable business enterprises in order to support their social missions. This is the reason why Jamaica National Building Society – through its JN Foundation – has decided to advocate in a big way for these organisations, in order to assist them achieve their social, environmental and economic aims”.

The comprehensive programme of support and guidance to be offered to these ventures will include: training workshops and seminars; a social network for the sector; business guides; partnership development; mentorship; market linkages and on-line resources for the wider public, who may wish to benefit from the programme. In addition, a select group will be invited to be a part of the SEBI business incubator, where they will receive special attention from, and on-going access to business consultants.

SEBI has been established to enable the growth and development of strong, viable and successful social enterprises throughout Jamaica; create employment and strengthen economic growth and stability; facilitate a culture change that builds and revitalizes communities and fosters socially responsive and responsible environments. It aims to serve as a transformative force that inspires community co-operation, stewardship and innovation for the economic advancement of Jamaicans.
