Jamaica’s Westwood High to resume 6th Form after 38 years
SOUTH FLORIDA – After 38 years of inactivity, the Westwood High School for Girls in Stewart Town, Trelawny will reopen its sixth form to students at the beginning of the new school in September 2014.
This was disclosed by the President of the South Florida Chapter Westwood Old Girl’s Association (SFCWOGA), Donna Nicholson as she addressed the association’s second annual dinner dance held at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Sunrise, Fort Lauderdale on Friday, July 4, 2014.
The news that the Ministry of Education has given formal approval for the resumption of classes was well received by all those present. “As an old student association, we are very happy about the resumption of the sixth form at our Alma Mater.” Ms. Nicholson pointed out that this is welcomed news, as Westwood was the only institution offering sixth form at the time so students had to journey to Brown’s Town and Montego Bay to attend A ‘level classes. She said that with the resumption of the sixth form, students within the parish would have another option to study at the advanced level.
The old girl president said that funds raised would provide additional scholarships and aid the reestablishment of the sixth form. President Nicholson said that since the launch of SFCWOGA in 2011, they have achieved much success in providing needed amenities to the institution as well as scholarships totaling US$3,000 to three students.
“Westwood has shaped the lives of many of Jamaica’s women who have made significant contributions to their various communities both locally and overseas. They have exemplified strong leadership skills and are pioneers in their respective fields of medicine, law, journalism, politics, education and other professions. We owe a debt of gratitude to our Alma Mater which has prepared us for life.”
From the class of 1971 which was recognized at the dinner, former editor of the Gleaner company, Wyvolyn Gager, received the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award for being the only woman to be named editor of the Gleaner Company and for her unparalleled leadership in the field of Journalism and contribution to her community.
