Jamaica’s Consul General greets Oasis of the Seas passengers enroute to Historic Falmouth Port

MIAMI – Jamaica’s Consul General, Sandra Grant Griffiths was on hand last Saturday (March 19) to share in the moment of excitement with some of the nearly 6,000 passengers aboard the new mega liner – Oasis of the Seas – before it embarked on its Caribbean voyage to Jamaica from the Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

Described as the world’s largest ship, the Royal Caribbean Cruise liner is on its Caribbean voyage making its inaugural stopover into the newly constructed Falmouth Port in Trelawny tomorrow, Tuesday, March 22, coinciding with the celebration of the official opening of the Falmouth Port. It will make stops in Haiti and Mexico before returning to its house port at Port Everglades.

As she spoke with the many enthusiastic passengers boarding the vessel, the Consul General briefly enlightened the many tour groups of families, friends and individuals to areas of Jamaica’s tourist attractions and the new Port development, while handing them souvenirs of Jamaican flags.

John and Lynn Bosneck of Pennsylvania were looking forward to their first trip to the Island, and moreso to the new Port. “We heard so much about Jamaica, we are excited.”

Three Chicagoan sisters, Lynn, Rita and Lara Hanna were also expressed excitement as they also spoke of another exciting trip to Jamaica, this time aboard the cruise liner.

Mrs. Grant Griffiths was accompanied on tour by officials of Royal Caribbean Cruise Limited, officials of Broward County Commission, and the Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

Meanwhile, development of the new Falmouth Port in nearing completion to accommodate the massive 200,000 ton, 5,400-passenger mega-liner. Royal Caribbean is working in conjunction with the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) on the re-development of the multi-million dollar revitalization project, a boost to the tourism industry.

Falmouth will become the fourth Jamaican port to serve the cruise industry. The phased-development project will include a themed retail shopping area, including on site attractions and displays, a historical center along with added excursion options. The project also includes a dock with two berths capable of hosting two cruise ships.

Those accompanying the Consul General included Broward County Commissioner, Dale Holness, Chief of Staff of the Broward County Commission, John Beckford, Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd., Management team, Santiago Scarone, Eunice Hernandez and Ms. Shorlene Crooks-Whyte, and Manager Corporate and Community Relations, Port Everglades, Ms. Ellen Kennedy.

Earlier last week, RCCL President and Chief Executive Officer, Adam Goldstein expressed confidence that the outlook for the cruise industry seemed positive, when he addressed participants at the 27th annual Cruise Shipping Convention in Miami.

Added to that, Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, also spoke of visitor arrivals at its highest in Jamaica’s history when he spoke at a Jamaican Tourism initiative in London, recently.
