Jamaican Women of Florida’s (JWOF) Scholarship Launch “Powerful Women..Next Generation” At first anniversary celebration

SOUTH FLORIDA – The Jamaican Women of Florida (JWOF) will launch its annual scholarship program to be awarded to the first recipient, at the first anniversary celebration of the organization on Saturday, April 19, at the Broward Convention Center.

The scholarship, “Powerful Women…Next Generation” renewable annually, is awarded to a first or second generation, Jamaican-American female high school student attending college in fall 2014. “The scholarship valued at $1,000 will encourage the recipient to achieve her four-year educational goal at a tertiary institution”, according to JWOF’s President, Dahlia Walker Huntington.

Applications are now being accepted and must be submitted by the deadline – Friday, April 11. In order to meet the criteria for the scholarship opportunity, the candidate must be of first or second generation Jamaican descent and resident of South Florida; have a high school graduating 3.5 GPA, which must be maintained throughout the tenure of the scholarship. The applicant’s study program should include credits in International Studies and/or Women’s studies.

Also, as part of the qualifying criteria, the candidate is required to demonstrate commitment as a volunteer in community projects. In addition, the candidate must compose an essay (no more than two (2) pages) about women who are trailblazers in your field of study illustrating how their success could influence your course of study as you pursue your scholastic achievement as a career woman.

The Scholarship will be awarded at the first anniversary celebration of JWOF – Reggae Jazz Brunch and Fashion Show – at the Broward Convention Center, 1950 Eisenhower Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale 33316, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. A full package of entertainment will include varied performances and high fashions showing the latest trends.
