Jamaican playwright, Patrick Brown’s play “ASSISTANT THIEF” is fulla laughs

MIAMI – Take two of Jamaica’s most renowned and talented actors in the persons of Oliver Samuels and Glen Campbell., “garnish” that with the comedic writing of the country’s most prolific comedic writer, Patrick Brown, and “season” it with skillful directing by Trevor Nairne, and you invariably end up with a theatrical gem.

Assistant Thief, set to be staged in South Florida early November, will have all comedy lovers salivating as this laugh-a-line play provides more than adequate exercise for the “funny-bone”.

Writer Patrick Brown seems to have again decided to “tek kin teeth kibber heart bun” like he has done in a number of his other comedies such as Oliver’s Posse for example where Brown seeks to highlight the plight of homeless children, by using a comedic vehicle to carry the all-important message. This time he looks at abuse in the household.

The scenario finds a burglar breaking into a house, only to find that another thief had already broken in a mere few minutes earlier. Pandemonium breaks loose as each insists on first right of refusal for the “spoils” of their labor.

Glen “Titus” Campbell & Oliver Samules

Samuels plays one of the thieves. The other is played by Glen “Titus” Campbell. Whenever these two comedic dynamos hit the stage, especially the same stage at the same time, it is usually comedic mayhem. It is no different in Assistant Thief, as they go head to head with catchy one-liners and rib-tickling scenarios.

The cast also includes the outstanding new acting sensation Camille Davis, who announced herself most forcefully over the last two years with creditable performances in Woody’s Last Stand, Vibes and Class of ‘73. In fact her portrayal of the ghetto fabulous “Dimples” in Vibes earned her an Actor Boy nomination for best actress.

In Assistant Thief Davis more than holds her own in the richness of the acting talent on stage, and proves yet again that she has a bright future in the theatre. Centerstage Workshop graduate Courtney Wilson also stands tall in the impressive talent on display, appearing as an overly nosy police officer.

Assistant Thief will be staged in South Florida at William T. Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens on Saturday, November 4th at 8:00 p.m., at the North Miami Beach Performing Arts Center on November 10th at 8:00 p.m. The play makes a rare South Miami-Dade appearance at Richmond Heights Middle School, November 11th at 8:00 p.m. and closes the run at Coral Springs Center for the Arts on Sunday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets are on sale at selected Caribbean outlets throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

Assistant Thief is presented by Riddims Marketing in association with Jamaica Awareness, Inc. and is sponsored by Air Jamaica, Western Union and Caribbean National Weekly newspaper.
