Miami The Consulate General of Jamaica in collaboration with the Jamaican Diaspora Southern United States will host a community forum on Saturday, March 28, 2009, 1pm to 4pm, at the Holy Family Episcopal Church, 18501 NW 7th Avenue in Miami Gardens.
Special guest will be Professor Dr. Neville Ying of the Jamaica Diaspora Institute at the Mona School of Business, University of the West Indies, Mona. He will update on the development of the Diaspora Institute in Jamaica, and ongoing efforts among first and second generations Jamaicans in the Diaspora in the Southern USA.
Participants at the forum will include representatives from community organizations, corporate and business leaders, media, and concerned citizens. Discussions will continue to focus on the ongoing and unprecedented community organization in the overseas Diaspora communities, according to Diaspora advisory Board representative to the Southern USA, attorney Marlon Hill.
Attendees will learn more about opportunities for collaboration among other organizations. Diaspora representatives from other communities throughout the Southern Region will participate in the forum via technology of the internet and conference call.
According to Mr. Hill, “the organizing effort among Jamaicans and persons of Jamaican descent overseas is ongoing work in progress. We are at a critical and positive crossroads in laying the foundation for continued development. The Jamaica Diaspora Institute will be an important institutional tool in supporting the overall goals,” he added.
So far, delegates at the three staging of the National Diaspora Conference held in Kingston, in 2004, 2006, and 2008, have been engaged in earnest efforts to deepen the relationship and the Government of Jamaica.
All Jamaican-focused organizations and nationals are invited to attend to share thoughts and ideas of issues important to Jamaica and its Diaspora.
