Jamaican Diaspora Elects Advisory Board Leadership At Third Biennial Conference

South Florida Attorney Marlon A. Hill re-elected to serve two-year term as representative for Southern U.S.

KINGSTON, Jamaica – At the 3rd Biennial Conference of the Jamaican Diaspora in Kingston, Jamaica, over 700 delegates from the United Kingdom, Canada, the Caribbean, Cuba, South Africa, and the United States convened for a series of workshops and dialogue with each other, the Government of Jamaica, and Jamaican private sector under the theme, “Borderless Partnership for National Development”.

On both days, delegates tackled the issues of Crime & Justice, Education & Culture, Economic Growth & Investment, the Role of the Church in National Development, and Youth/Future Leadership and developed respective action plans for implementation.

On the second day of the Conference, the delegates of the respective regions elected a 7-member Advisory Board to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. The members on the Advisory Board are drawn from the major locations where Jamaicans reside overseas – namely the United States of America, Canada and the United Kingdom.

The 7 member Board elected includes:

Ms. Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams, Esq. (Canada), serving her third term

Claudette Cameron-Stewart (Canada), serving her first term

Celia Grandison-Markey (United Kingdom), serving her first term

Derrick Douglas (United Kingdom), serving his first term

Mr. Patrick Beckford (USA-Northeast), serving his first term (from New Jersey)

Mr. Wayland Richards (USA-Midwest/West), serving his first term (from Minnesota)

Marlon Hill, Esq. (USA-South)


Marlon Hill

Serving a second term of two years, Marlon A. Hill is a founding partner and corporate attorney with the law firm of delancyhill, P.A. in South Florida and past president of the Caribbean Bar Association. A past student of St. George’s College, Mr. Hill migrated to Florida in 1985 at age 14. Mr. Hill accompanied a delegation of over 50 persons from the Southern United States, including persons from Houston, Nashville, Atlanta, Tallahassee, Tampa, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Broward County, and Miami-Dade County.

The Board is expected to meet twice per year with the Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to execute next steps for the Action Plans generated from the workshops at the Conference. The next biennial Conference is scheduled for June 2010.
