TORONTO, Canada – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating the circumstances surrounding an attack on the Jamaican Consulate in Toronto, early Wednesday morning (August 26), which left minor damage.
In a release Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade stated that, according to official reports, at about 4 a.m., three persons threw two ‘molotov cocktail’ devices through a window of the basement garage of the Consulate, starting a fire.
The fire brigade was summoned and they quickly extinguished the blaze, which burnt sections of an office van. The firefighters gained entry to the building by smashing a glass door.
The police found remnants of the two devices used in the unexpected attack on the building, for which no motive has yet been determined. The building also houses the Jamaica Tourist Board and Jamaica Information Service (JIS) office.
Commenting on the attack, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Dr. the Hon. Kenneth Baugh, commended the Canadian police and fire brigade for their speedy and efficient response.
He expressed the hope that that the investigations would be fruitful and the offenders apprehended with dispatch.
