Jamaican appointed to UN emergency relief advisory group

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Dr. Barbara Carby, Director General of the Organization of Disaster and Emergency Management (ODPEM) in Jamaica was appointed to the Advisory Group for the new United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

Dr. Carby brings to the CERF table a strong experience of the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States in resourcing response needs. In the last decade Jamaica has been repeatedly impacted hurricanes and floods.

CERF will advise the United Nations Secretary General on the use and impact of funds designed to bring immediate relief to victims of disaster.
“We share the United Nations view of working to move from lottery to predictability so that all those who suffer receive aid” said Coordinator of CDERA, Jeremy Collymore.

“CDERA will work closely with Dr. Carby in an effort to ensure that the CERF goal of dispensing of the silent disasters is realized” he added
Dr. Carby’s appointment allows CARICOM a voice on this important international mechanism for strengthening the equity and effectiveness of humanitarian response.
