Jamaica to Host First Forum of Ministers of Social Development

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica is to host the first Forum of Ministers of Social Development in the Caribbean from January 24- 26, 2010.

The Forum of Ministers, is expected to create a platform for regional dialogue on strategies and social policy at the Ministerial level, the sharing of best practices in creating national policies and promoting regional research policy linkages, among other things.

The forum will he held under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Management of Social Transformation (MOST) Programme. Funding to cover the cost of the Conference will be provided by UNESCO.

The MOST Programme was launched in 1994 under the scope of the Social and Human Sciences Sector of UNESCO with the aim of developing policies applicable to social realities. The MOST Programme also promotes the use of social research finding to direct public policy for social development.

The decision for Jamaica to host the forum was approved by Cabinet and announced by Minister with responsibility for Information, Daryl Vaz at the last post cabinet meeting at Jamaica House.
