Jamaica Labor Minister to meet with US Deputy Secretary of Labor

Washington, DC – Jamaica’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon Derrick Kellier is currently on a five-day official visit to Washington DC, Virginia and New York where the minister and his delegation will hold talks with various US government officials and visit a number of farms operating under the farm work program.

On the first leg of his visit, the Labour and Social Security minister, met with Charge D ‘Affairs of the Embassy of Jamaica, Mrs. Marsha Coore-Lobban at the embassy on Monday, August 17, where they discussed various aspects of the farm work program.

On Tuesday, August 18, the Minister will meet with members of the Farm Work Liaison staff at the Jamaica Central Labour Headquarters in Washington DC where he will be given an overview of the farm work program.

Minister Kellier will travel on Wednesday, August 19 to New Burgh, New York where he will address a reception held in his honor by the management of Hudson Valley Corporation.  He will also present longevity award certificates to farm workers who have given 15, 20, 25, 30 and over 30 years of service to the farm work program.  The Labour Minister, will go on visit a number of farms including the W G Minard Farm, Porpiglia Farm, Hudson River Farm and M G Hurd Farm, which together employ a large number of Jamaican farm workers.

On Thursday, Minister Kellier will pay a courtesy call on US Deputy Secretary of Labour Chris Lu, and on Friday, August 21, visit the Hydroponic Farm in Virginia to gain an understanding of the farm’s operations.

The Minister and his delegation which include Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Mrs. Collette Risden, Special Advisor to the minister, Everton Pryce, Director of Planning and Manpower in the Ministry of Labour Mrs. Andrea Stennett and Chief Liaison Officer of the Jamaica Central Labour Organization, Clayton Solomon will return to Jamaica on Saturday, August 22, 2015.
