Jamaica Inn Backgammon Tournament Connects Community and Conservation
William Mahfood, Joey Issa, Metry Seaga and other business leaders compete in the Backgammon Tournament

OCHO RIOS, Jamaica — Jamaica Inn turned strategy into a seaside spectacle June 19–20. The resort hosted the ninth annual Jamaica Inn Backgammon Tournament at the historic property in support of the White River Fish Sanctuary.
Across two days of play, the tournament brought together a high-profile field of business and civic figures for a competition. The event paired old-school gamesmanship with a conservation-minded cause. Michael Chai ultimately claimed the title, edging Mark Roberts 11–9 in a final marked by patience, pressure and precision. The win gave Chai his second tournament crown. Notably, it arrived years after his first victory.
Desmond Mair Insurance Brokers served as title sponsor. This lent the milestone weight of a Jamaican institution currently celebrating 100 years of service.

The event was also backed by a wide roster of supporting sponsors. These included Wisynco (Wata), Guardsman, Select Brands, Mayberry Investments, Jewels & Time, VIP Attractions, Harbour Wine and Spirits, Worthy Park Estate, Billy Craig Insurance, Couples Resorts, Hot off the Press, WB Trophies and Shane Aquart.
Among the notable players were Wisynco chairman William Mahfood, St. Ann Custos Joey Issa, and former PSOJ president Metry Seaga. This underscored the tournament’s standing as both a competitive fixture and a social highlight on Jamaica’s hospitality calendar.
