Jamaica And Margaritaville Team Up To Celebrate Jamaica’s First Musher At The Iditarod

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica Dog Sled Team’s debut at the Iditarod – known as the “Last Great Race on Earth” – is continuing to create excitement through a variety of special activities and promotions as part of the Rootin’ For Newton campaign. To celebrate Jamaica Dogsled Team musher Oswald “Newton” Marshall’s completion of the Iditarod, the Jamaica Tourist Board has teamed up with Jimmy Buffett’s popular Margaritaville restaurants for the Rootin’ For Newton celebration promotion featured in select locations. Fans of the Jamaica Dogsled Team can also visit the special Facebook page dedicated to Marshall to leave celebratory messages for him.

“We are proud that Jamaica’s athletes are continuing to make strides in winter sports, from the first Jamaica Bobsleigh team to participate at the Winter Olympics, to our first member of the Jamaica Ski Team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, and now Newton Marshall as the first Jamaican musher at the Iditarod,” remarked Jamaica’s Director of Tourism John Lynch. “We are cheering on Newton and are happy to share our excitement with the world.”

Singer Jimmy Buffett continues to be a supportive sponsor of the Jamaica Dog Sled Team, and is passing along the excitement to consumers at all Margaritaville restaurants and stores with feature videos running every 90 minutes on the Jamaican musher. The Rootin’ For Newton promotion will be featured in select Margaritaville restaurants until April 2: New Orleans, Key West, Orlando, Mohegan Sun (CT), Panama City Beach, Glendale (AZ), Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach. Consumers can also go to www.margaritaville.com/mushmon to enter to win a five-day/four-night trip for two to the all-inclusive Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort & Spa in Ocho Rios, with roundtrip air courtesy of FunJet Vacations.

While in Jamaica, the lucky winner will receive a special tour with the Jamaica Dogsled Team at Chukka Cove guided by Marshall, who will share “Tales from the Trail” about his Iditarod experience. The prize also includes a week’s worth of adventure filled tours offered by Chukka Caribbean and a copy of the Underdog DVD, a documentary chronicling Newton’s life and his journey to the Yukon Quest. In addition, the lucky winners will also enjoy a $200 gift certificate from Margaritaville Ocho Rios, in the Island Village Shopping and Entertainment Complex.

Marshall’s inspiring journey has not been left unnoticed. The athlete, who gained popularity during the months leading up to the Iditarod, was featured in a two–page spread in the March 15 issue of Sports Illustrated Magazine, as well as other national and regional media outlets.
