Haitian Studies Association Conference: October 4-6, 2007 Theme: Weaving Transnational Ties: Partnering for Haiti

BOCA RATON – The Haitian Studies Association (HSA) will hold its 19th Annual Conference to be held at Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL on October 4th-6th, 2007.

The conference committee welcomes all authors, scholars, teachers, librarians, archivists, activists, scientists, artists and the general public to register and attend sessions addressing Challenges & Possibilities for Haiti, Collaborative and Transnational Research in Haiti, Haitian literature, Haiti’s visual, musical, and performance arts, Images and Representations of Haiti/Haitians, Haitian Creole in political and technological perspective, Haitian-Dominican Relations, The Role of the Diaspora in Development, Education in the Haitian Diaspora, Religion and Transnationalism, Spotlights on Emerging Scholars, Education and Democracy in Haiti, and the screenings of two powerful films on Haiti, Poto Mitan and The Road to Fondwa.

The host and major patron of this year’s conference is Lynn University. During the week preceding the conference, Lynn will be offering members of its student body and the general public the opportunity to participate in a series of Haiti-themed events. The schedule includes a Haitian Art Exhibit (Monday 10/1, 2nd Floor Lynn Library), a public forum by Kesner Pharel, Scholar-in-Residence (Tuesday 10/2, 9:30 AM, Green Center), a Haitian Poetry Coffee House (Tuesday 10/2, 7:30 PM, Knights Court), a Soccer Match featuring The Delray All-Stars (Wednesday, 10/3, 6PM, Practice Field). These events are free and open to the general public.

In addition to panel discussions during the conference program, there will also be a cultural evening entitled “Haiti Dreaming: Haitian Voices and Culture in Exile.” The event will feature performances by dancer Vitolio Jeune and the band N’Digenous (Friday 10/5, 8PM, International Center).

This year’s honorees are author Edwidge Danticat (Award of Excellence) and educator Carole Berotte Joseph (Award for Outstanding Service).

The Haitian Studies Association is a professional organization that provides a forum for the interchange of ideas about Haiti and its people at home and abroad. The association is dedicated to encouraging new scholarship and modes of pedagogy regarding Haiti, its history and culture.

It also disseminates knowledge about Haiti in general and celebrates the scholarly achievements and contributions of those whose research interests focus on Haiti and its people. The Association’s official publication, The Journal of Haitian Studies, is the only refereed scholarly journal solely dedicated to scholarship on Haiti and Haiti’s relations with the international community.

All events will take place at Lynn University, 3601 North Military Trail, Boca Raton, FL 33431. Lynn is easily accessible via South Florida’s major highways and the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority’s rail and bus lines.
