Haitian American Historical Society raises funds for monument recognizing Haitian Soldiers who fought in The U.S. Independence War

CORAL SPRINGS – The first Annual Haitian American Fashion Show Extravaganza took place recently at the luxurious Marriott Heron Bay in Coral Springs.

Over 300 participants attended this luncheon and proceeds will benefit the Haitian American Historical Society as it seeks to honor those Haitian soldiers who fought for American Independence at the siege of Savannah in 1779.

This project is a partnership between the Haitian American Historical Society, the City of Savannah and the following collaborators and advisors: the Coastal Heritage Society, the First African Baptist Church, and the Civil Rights Museum.

While the City provided the land and site, the Haitian American Historical Society is responsible for the funding, construction and installation of the monument depicting the figures under arms which represents the ten companies of Haitian soldiers of the line who fought in the six-week-long siege of Savannah. The life size bronze monument will be placed at the Franklin Square, an area well known for its African-American heritage of Savannah and its proximity to the well-visited city market area.

Attendees were feted and treated to a delightful afternoon of fashion provided by Stein Mart from its boutique collection and special entertainment by local artists. In addition, through the silent auction a number of first rated items were sold.

The Haitian-American Historical Society will continue with its effort to raise funds through the purchase of bricks, starting at $150.00.
