Haitian-American community activist passes away

MIAMI – The Honorable Representative Ronald Brisé is saddened to announce the death of beloved community activist and community liaison to his office, Hebert Jules, who passed away on October 25th, 2008 from complications from a stroke.

Mr. Jules began his career in public service in Miami in 1989; since then, he has advocated and fought tirelessly toward the improvement of the Haitian-American community. At the Haitian-American Foundation, Inc., he worked to reduce student drop-out rates and youth crime.

In 1995, he joined the City of Miami with the Cuban/Haitian Refugee Program where provided counseling and employability skills training to participants. He continued to address the needs of the Haitian-American community in different capacities with Miami-Dade County Elections Department and Department of Children and Families.

Most recently, Mr. Jules worked as a community outreach coordinator for the City of North Miami where he championed the causes of the youth and senior citizens by organizing events which included city, county, and state resources. Rep. Brisé, along with other community members, acknowledges that Mr. Jules “leaves big shoes to fill.” “Hebert was one of the few people who had mastered the qualities of a true leader: he was humble enough to work with everyone yet never backed away from taking a leadership role in the community. He also never lost sight of his vision for the Haitian-American community and the Miami community as a whole and worked tirelessly towards that vision. He will be sorely missed but not forgotten.”

Visitation will be from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31st at the Haitian Evangelical Baptist Church located at 14455 Memorial Highway in North Miami. Immediately following the viewing service, a wake will be held at the Griffing Center located at 12220 Griffing Blvd./N.E 3rd Avenue in North Miami. A Mass will be celebrated at noon on Saturday, November 1st at Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church located at 110 NE 62nd Street in Miami.
