Govt. Of Jamaica’s position regarding proposed intention by CARICOM Countries to establish a Political Union by 2013

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Government has taken note of a joint declaration issued last Friday by the Governments of a number of CARICOM countries, signalling their intention to establish a political union by 2013.

The Government also notes that discussions are to be held this week, with three other CARICOM countries, to encourage their participation in the proposed political union. The Government of Jamaica, respects their right to do so.

The Government of Jamaica, has demonstrated its commitment to the process of regional integration, as prescribed in the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas. This commitment was reaffirmed by Prime Minister Bruce Golding, at the 29th Heads of Government Conference in July. Indeed, Jamaica is among the most advanced countries, in implementing the provisions of the revised treaty, especially with regard to the establishment of the CARICOM Single Market.

However, the decision of some CARICOM countries, to establish a political union, has implications for the structure and, indeed, the future of CARICOM. The Government of Jamaica, will request that the issue be brought for discussions at the highest level of CARICOM. Jamaica’s position will be evaluated based on those discussions.
