Golf Tourism Is On the “Upswing” In St. Kitts

ST. KITTS – A well-established tournament on the island’s growing roster of premier golf events, golfers will tee off on the greens of St. Kitts this spring at the 32nd Johnnie Walker St. Kitts Open held May 17 – 19, 2013.

“Golf tourism is a key niche market that St. Kitts has targeted for growth,” said Senator Ricky Skerritt, Minister of Tourism & International Transport, Trade, Industry, Commerce & Consumer Affairs. “In addition to the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club and, on Nevis, the Four Seasons Resort Nevis Golf Club, we will soon be home to a hillside Ian Woosnam championship course at Kittitian Hill and a Tom Fazio championship course at Christophe Harbour on St. Kitts’ southeast peninsula, providing a wealth of challenges for golf travelers of varying skill levels that’s unrivalled in a destination of our size. This hallmark island tournament continues to help us attract visitors from the golfing community as we ramp up marketing efforts internationally to support all the courses.”

The St. Kitts Open is a two day, two-round, 36-hole individual stroke play tournament for golfers from the US, Canada and the Caribbean. Hosted by the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club, male golfers will compete in one of four flights including Championship, Men’s, Senior, Super Senior and women will compete in their own flight.

The players will compete for prizes for gross and net champions. Activities begin at 6pm on Friday, May 17, with an opening ceremony for the event and continue with tournament play on Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19.

Complimentary lunch for competitors is included on both days of play and breakfast is available at the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club’s Clubhouse. A closing ceremony following play on Sunday evening concludes the event.

Registration for the St. Kitts Open is $275 per golfer for non-club members or $225 per golfer for members and juniors and includes two rounds of golf and complimentary lunch on both days of play. $25 cart fees for the Friday practice round are not included. Known to be one of the Caribbean’s most scenic and challenging courses, the Royal St. Kitts Golf Club is an 18-hole course managed by Marriott Golf and set adjacent to the The St. Kitts Marriott Resort & Royal Beach Casino. This sea-side course was first designed by Peter Thompson in 1975 and then redesigned by Thomas McBroom in 2003. Its unique layout offers holes on both the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. It was the first Caribbean golf course to earn Audubon Certification for its environmental practices and is a natural haven for both native and migratory birds.
