Florida Legislature passes bill supported by Miami Dade Commissioner that would allow partial payments of property taxes

Miami-Dade County – On April 30, the Florida Legislature passed legislation supported by Miami-Dade County Commissioner Rebeca Sosa that would allow property owners the flexibility of making partial payments on their property taxes.

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved Commissioner Sosa’s resolution, presented on February 17, 2009. Florida law currently requires payment of the full amount of a property tax bill in order for the Tax Collector to accept the payment tendered.

“This is a great bill for Floridians, especially residents of Miami-Dade County who are suffering through this down economy. I am sure that this will take a huge burden off of homeowners who can now make reasonable smaller payments on their property taxes as opposed to one large lump sum,” said Commissioner Sosa. “I thank the Florida Legislature for passing the item, particularly Senator Jeremy Ring and Representative Doug Holder, who sponsored the Senate and House companion bills.”

“One of the most frequently asked question by our taxpayers is whether they can make partial payments on their property taxes. I think this is a great piece of legislation that will really help taxpayers who are going through some very difficult times,” said Fernando Casamayor, Tax Collector, Miami-Dade County.
