Facing an economic downturn South Florida gears up for a “Prosperity Campaign”

FT. LAUDERDALE – On Thursday, January 31st the Children’s Services Council of Broward County will officially kick off the 2008 “Prosperity Campaign” at the Broward County Family Resource Center, located on 10077 NW 29th Street in Coral Springs, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

The “Prosperity Campaign” is an effort by several organizations throughout Broward County urging and helping qualified residents to file their taxes and claim the Earned Income Tax Credit for free.

The Campaign also builds community awareness of other government and private services that help low income wage earners and their families. Now in its fifth year, the Campaign has proven to be one of the most successful means of providing much needed relief to qualified taxpayers.

Representatives from Hispanic Unity of Florida, ACORN, The Urban League of Broward County, Minority Development & Empowerment Inc., United Way of Broward County, Volunteer Broward, WorkForce One, Department of Children and Families, 2-1-1 First Call for Help and Broward County government will all be on hand to help motivate the “foot soldiers” of what the CSC dubs a prosperity movement.

“The volunteers and staff of these organizations are the real heroes of this Campaign” according to Cindy Arenberg Seltzer, President/CEO of the Children’s Services Council of Broward County. “They are on the front lines of our push for greater prosperity for our residents. Since 2002, the EITC prosperity Campaign has returned over $70 million dollars to low income families in Broward County alone. We could not do this alone. The Campaign is truly a grassroots and community effort.”

To emphasize the regional nature of the Prosperity Campaign, the CSC will coordinate many of its activities with counterparts in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties. Accordingly, a morning event in Miami-Dade co-sponsored by the Human Services Coalition of Dade will feature Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Broward County Commissioner Sue Gunzburger as keynote speakers.

The morning event will be followed by the afternoon rally in Coral Springs, for participating organizations and the public to learn more about the Campaign. Broward League of Cities President and Hallandale Mayor Joy Cooper, and Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook are expected to be on hand for the afternoon event.
