Consul General of Jamaica responds to activists about attacks on gays in Jamaica

MIAMI – A group of gay activists staged a demonstration at several locations of Jamaican overseas missions in protest of recent incidents of anti-gay mob violence on the island.

Activists who met with Consul General Ricardo Allicock and his staff in Miami wanted them to launch a public awareness campaign about gay rights in Jamaica, and to see authorities investigate gay-related hate crimes.

According to Consul General Ricardo Allicock, “The Government of Jamaica accepts its obligation to protect the rights of every citizen regardless of his or her affiliation, and does not condone any form of criminality.

The Government is committed to upholding the rule of law, and continues in its efforts to create a more peaceful, caring and understanding society.

The Commissioner of Police, Hardley Lewin has initiated a zero-tolerance policy towards breaches of the law and as such it is safe to assume that those persons who commit any form of crime, or any criminal violation of human rights, will experience the long arm of the law.”
