Conservationist walks to save Northern Range in Trinidad

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad – In four days, internationally acclaimed conservationist Heather-Dawn Herrera will begin a trek around Trinidad in an attempt to get Trinidadians appreciative about the environment. She will be leading her group Hudhue Nature Trailing and Conservation Outfit for approximately 12 days.

“Trinidad is blessed with a rich variety of ‘greenery’,” Herrera said. “This gives it a distinct status of being part South American part Caribbean. This ‘greenery’ consists of luxuriant tropical forests, rare savannahs and precious herbaceous and brackish wetlands. This ‘greenery’ nurtures flora and fauna that number among the most unique in the world. The people of this land have also been nurtured by this ‘greenery’. As such, it is only natural that they seek to preserve this ‘greenery’.

Our ‘All Trinidad Hike-A-Thon’ seeks to bring our people together in a conservation initiative that will rejuvenate existing environmental groups, create new ones and instill awareness and inspiration among all.”

Herrera has already completed two other hike-a-thon’s; both through and around the Northern Range in 2003 and 2005 respectively. According to Herrera, the aim was to highlight the importance of Trinidad’s Northern Range as our biggest natural resource and to promote conservation of this national treasure.

Herrera was the only woman to ever lead such a group and also the only woman in Trinidad to attempt such an ambitious project.

Heather-Dawn Herrera has been an environmental journalist and conservationist for over 30 years. She has won the Hummingbird Silver medal as well as the Green Leaf award. She is also an author and documentary film-maker.
