Community Blog: What Ever Happened To Bootstraps?

By: Pat White

MIAMI – They (Republicans especially) constantly tell the poor that they should pull themselves up with their own bootstraps! Pull yourself out of your financial hole. Don’t rely on Government for a hand out – a bail out! What’s even sadder, getting help from the government has become such a taboo that people look down on those who accept government help.

On the other hand, if you are a giant financial corporation, there is nothing taboo about receiving help from the government. During this financial fiasco, the little hard working people are the ones that are loosing out. They are the ones that are left holding the crappy end of the stick. They are blamed for going into loans that they could not manage, so some say they should suffer the consequences. However, the big giant corporations funded loans for predatory lenders. The blame should be shared by everyone involved – the borrowers for signing a loan that they could not maintain; the predatory lenders and the funding companies. The funding companies are being bailed out and not much is being done for the borrowers who are loosing their homes, at an alarming rate.

Large Farming Businesses get billions of dollars in subsidies; big corporations get huge tax breaks; but we scuff at the poor, single mom who accepts help from the government. The whole purpose of government is to help the poor; to help those who are under served. This might sound like an oxymoron, but the middle class is the poor today. Government is for the people. While the government does help the poor to some extent, this (government for the people notion)has been distorted into government being for large corporations and private industries.

Why can’t the rich pull themselves up by their own bootstraps when they get into a financial hole? Oh I forgot – the rich wear stilettos and patent leather shoes.
