Commentary with Winston Barnes: Hope

DAVIE – Last week Jamaican sporting enthusiasts were treated to the ninety ninth edition of the schools athletic championships. The renewal of the meet attracted worldwide attention and interest because of the results of the 2008 Olympics that saw a Usain Bolt reign as the fastest man in the world.

As folk continue to seek out ways to cope with tough times, it would be instructive to learn from the school that won the boys championships. Kingston college is no stranger to being victorious having won many times in the past. They, however, entered the games as the distinct underdog, yet, the team won by one and a half points.

As one observer said, this was possible because one runner who apparently experienced muscle problems, nonetheless walked across the finish line, gaining one critical point.

The team that entered the games the clear favorite had one athlete quit the race after he fell. Therein, I submit is the reason one team won and the other, the favorite, did not win.

I submit that all who face harsh and frustrating times, now, consider the Kingston college motto which translated means, “the brave may fall, but never yield.”
