Commentary With Winston Barnes: El Pape

SOUTH FLORIDA – For those of us who have been mesmerized by El Pape and the obvious difference he has brought to his office, I pray that is not all we get from his visit. One does not have to be Roman Catholic or even Christian to have something of an understanding or even admiration for what El Pape embodies.

El Pape’s humility, love for children and a fearlessness to speak to power without malice and yet without holding back what he deems necessary to be said in the right place and time. Whether in Cuba or in the houses of Congress in the U.S., this Pope in a most genial and gentle manner called for change. Change to see human kind as not mere entities to be exploited whether for profit or as political toy pieces.

Pope Francis

Yet, maybe the truest purpose this Pope could serve in this country and elsewhere is to pose a question by his mere presence and what he did and said.

The question? When will church leaders find the gumption to speak truth straight to the face of power? When will church leaders in this country rip from their thinking of the need for political correctness and say what the people of God need to be saying in this world at this time.

Just like Christ did not set out to win any popularity contests, church leaders today need to witness regardless of what man thinks.
