Commentary With Winston Barnes: Deportation
SOUTH FLORIDA – This might not seem appropriate today as we remember the horrors of this date in 2001, but there is a connection. After the aircraft smashed into the world trade center buildings, people from our very community here in South Florida faced suspicion on entering airports because un-trained and obviously biased eyes saw East Indians as we call them as Middle East terrorist suspects.
Join that with the calls these days for the deportation of eleven million un-documented people from this country. And as you contemplate do not dilute yourself into thinking it cannot happen. Listened to an interview of the author of a book that documented the deportation of millions of Mexicans, both illegal and U.S. born early in the twentieth century.
Systematically Mexicans were rounded up, given train tickets and told to show up at stations to be shipped to the border of Mexico—all new history to me, in the late 1920 to the early 1930s. So do not think it will never happen go check out this history of not long ago.
Consider too that the talk of a man who sometimes seems un-hinged has support among a whole lot of people in this country who agree with deporting eleven million people. And do not fool yourself into thinking they will ask if you became a citizen or not, before they offer you a one way ticket out.
