City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones Celebrates Haitian Heritage Month

MIAMI – City of Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones of District 5, joined by Miami-Dade Commissioner Audrey Edmonson of District 3 and the 2006 Haitian Heritage committee members will officially kick-off Haitian Heritage Month at a press conference on Monday, May 1st, 2006 at the Freedom Garden, located at 6135 N. Miami Avenue at 10:30 a.m. This years theme is “Celebrating the Past, Building the Future”.

During the press conference participants will announce the activities surrounding the month-long celebration. Some of the activities will include Haitian art exhibits, street festivals, book signings, a youth march with the Mayor’s Youth Council /Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the first annual Toussaint L’Ouverture Parade and Birthday Celebration to name a few. All Haitian Heritage month events are free and open to the public.

Participating organizations include City of Miami Film, Arts, Culture and Entertainment, Miami Parks and Recreation, NET offices, Miami-Dade County and Miami-Dade County Public schools. Media attending the press conference will receive a copy of the calendar listings at that time.

These events are part of the City of Miami’s commitment to revitalize Little Haiti and encourage residents from other areas to visit and ultimately move into the community. As part of the revitalization efforts, the City of Miami has placed new landscaping at the Toussaint L’Ouverture Freedom Garden and are working towards completing the Little Haiti Park, which will be located at 6301 NE 2 Avenue and include a cultural community Center for the entire neighborhood.
