Children s Services Council and Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation to Promote Literacy for Homeless Youth

LAUDERHILL – Children of all ages need year-round access to books and increased reading motivation, according to the Reading Is Fundamental website. At its March meeting, the Children’s Services Council of Broward County (CSC) approved $35,000 in leveraged funds to support “Hope for Literacy,” a year-round, out of school time program provided by the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation.

The program will begin June, 2014 and serve 20 elementary students who are currently living at the Shepherd’s Way Shelter in Fort Lauderdale, or who were recently homeless and attend North Fork Elementary.

In addition to academic support, individualized tutoring and homework assistance, every enrolled child will receive at least one book to keep, reinforcing that ownership of a book means ownership of its knowledge. The Hope for Literacy program will continue the partnership between CSC and the Russell Life Skills and Reading Foundation, which was founded in 1999 by Miami Dolphins alumnus Twan Russell. Since 2005, the organization has provided the literacy component for the CSC-funded Maximizing Out-of-School Time program in Hollywood.
