MIAMI-DADE – Chairman Jean Monestime sponsored a resolution supporting President Obama’s executive action on immigration. The Board of County Commissioners approved the resolution at its June 2 meeting.

“Our County has benefitted culturally and economically from hardworking immigrant families and we want to honor that,” Chairman Monestime said.  “We must not turn our backs on the long-standing members of our community whose children were born here.”

DAPA (Deferred Action for Parental Accountability) and the expansion of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) would stop the deportation of parents of U.S. citizens and permanent residents, and of immigrants who came to the country at a young age. Miami-Dade is the first county to pass a resolution in support of Obama’s executive action on immigration, although a number of Florida cities have passed similar resolutions.
