Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announces recall on pediatric H1N1 vaccines

Tallahassee – Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the non-safety related recall of specific lots of pediatric H1N1 injectable vaccine. The vaccine, manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur did not meet technical postproduction standards for efficacy.

“We wanted to let parents know that this is not a recall for safety. Children who were vaccinated with these specific lots of vaccine do not need to be re-vaccinated,” said State Surgeon General Ana Viamonte Ros.

According to information received from the CDC, “The vaccine potency is only slightly below the “specified” range. The vaccine in these lots is still expected to be effective in stimulating a protective response despite this slight reduction in the concentration of antigen. There is no need to re-administer a dose to those who received vaccine from these lots.”

Florida received 270,000 doses of this type of vaccine, but only 40,000 doses are in the lots being recalled. County health departments with the recalled product are removing this preparation from their inventory. Information has also been sent to private health care providers and they are advised to remove the product from their inventory. Sanofi Pasteur will send instructions to all providers about how to return this recalled vaccine.
