Caribbean TV Shows Receive Top Ratings in South Florida

PEMBROKE PINES – Back to back primetime Caribbean TV shows ‘Island Origins’ and ‘Island Stylee’ have proven that there is a solid place for Caribbean content on South Florida television.

BECON-TV, the exclusive SoFlo carrier of both programs, has confirmed that since their December 2015 premiere, they have risen to become the second and third most popular programs on the station by viewership rating.

With over 600,000 English-speaking Caribbeans in South Florida facing a tremendous lack of representation, the producers believe that the success of these quality programs was inevitable.

Island-Hour-Gif-Side-Banner‘Island Origins’ is a Caribbean-American lifestyle magazine that includes light interviews, opinions, event coverage, cooking and more. It is hosted by popular opinionated South Florida personality and columnist Calibe Thompson with guests including Shaggy, Kevin Lyttle, Tessanne Chin, Ato Boldon and Jennifer Carroll.

For many years the iconic travel magazine ‘Island Stylee’ was the exclusive in-flight programming of Air Jamaica, showcasing the warmth and beauty of the Caribbean and all its colorful locations and characters. The award-winning series’ most popular host was model Rachel Stuart.

BECON-TV marketing executive Noel Hyatt said, “We are happy to bring a unique and diverse block of programming to our South Florida community. Our viewership has increased every month and these continue to be two of our more popular programs”.

The shows air on South Florida’s BECON-TV (Channel 63 / Comcast 19) on Mondays from 9:30 – 10:30PM with repeats on Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays from 8:30 – 9:30PM. Viewers can watch throughout the tri-county area from as far south as the Keys to as far north as Vero Beach. The current season of both shows will be available through December 2016.

The presenters of Island Origins and Island Stylee are Blondie Ras Productions, producers of national PBS and Create TV Caribbean cooking series Taste the Islands, and Frame by Frame Productions, 40 year veterans of the Caribbean broadcast industry.

BECON-TV (WBECTV) is an FCC licensed station broadcasting educational and instructional programs on channel 19 on Comcast, and channel 63 on AT&T, DirecTV, Dish Network, Atlantic Broadband and over the air.
