ST. MARY, Jamaica – Veteran dancehall entertainer Capleton is shifting the spotlight from stage show to community support. He is placing his annual St Mary Mi Come From concert on hold. Instead, he is announcing a back-to-school treat for families in St Mary.
The philanthropic artiste is fresh off the June 26 release of his latest album Heights of Fire. He will host the August 5 initiative at Port Maria Primary School. This event will benefit children, parents and elders from surrounding St Mary communities.
Capleton said the decision reflects a desire to meet families where the need is most immediate.
“Education is one of the keys to a brighter future for the country. We want the children going back to school with a positive attitude, give them some fun, help with the school supplies they need, and ease some of the burden off their parents,” said Capleton. “I feel like the country has not fully recovered from Hurricane Melissa, and with rising inflation, this year would not be the best time to keep the show.”
The event will combine practical school support with a family-friendly community fun day.
Children will receive educational gifts from the St Mary Mi Come From Foundation, including books, bags and writing materials. The day will also feature games, rides, food and treats.
Capleton said the elderly will also be honored with gifts and essential items, adding, “The elders paved the way for us, so we want to treat them with the dignity they deserve and let them know they are appreciated.”
