Broward County Officials Aim To Attract Caribbean Businesses

Broward County Foreign Trade Zones To Look At Attracting Caribbean Business

Miramar – Broward County officials will discuss with business and policy leaders from the Caribbean including Cuba how its foreign trade zones might be utilized by companies in the Caribbean and here to facilitate increased two-way trade.

The discussions will form part of the agenda of the February 10th Conference on ‘Doing Business with the Caribbean: Trade and Investment Opportunities’ to be held at the Miramar Cultural Center.

The conference is an initiative by the CARICOM Outreach Program of Outreach Aid to the Americas Inc. and the City of Miramar and is a follow up to discussions held between Mayor Wayne Messam and Guyana’s Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge last October at a conference here.

Two presentations on the Broward County’s foreign trade zones will be made by Ms. Karen Reece, Foreign Trade Zone Administrator, Ft. Lauderdale Executive Airport and Broward County Foreign Trade Zone Operator Mr. Robert Jacob, Jr.

Guyana’s Ambassador to the United States and Dean of the CARICOM diplomatic corps in the United States, Bayney Karran will declare the conference open while the Minister of Trade of Belize, the honorable Rafael Contreras will be the keynote speaker at the conference luncheon.

“As the Caribbean region seeks to attract investment and expand its exports these foreign trade zones can play a critical role in reducing costs to Caribbean manufacturers and exporters as well importers and distributors from Florida,” says conference chair, Wesley Kirton.
