Bermuda Regiment Deployment not required for upcoming Summit of the Americas

HAMILTON, Bermuda – Trinidad and Tobago has secured the regional security forces it requires for the 5th Summit of the Americas, therefore the Bermuda Regiment will not be sending soldiers.

The issue of sending troops was raised by Premier Dr. Ewart Brown with Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Patrick Manning during the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in Belize City, Belize last week.

Upon his return to Bermuda, Premier Brown discussed the issue with Home Affairs Minister Sen. David Burch. After more detailed talks with the Trinidadians it was decided a Bermuda Regiment deployment would not be necessary.

United States President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper along with more than two dozen Heads of Government and State are expected to attend the 5th Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago next month.
