Basil Dawkins’ “Uptown Bangarang” to thrill West Palm Beach & Atlanta audiences

WEST PALM BEACH – West Palm Beach & Atlanta theatre goers are in for a real treat as Sunshine Theatre Company is back with another outstanding production in Basil Dawkins’ award winning comedy play, “Uptown Bangarang”.

Dawkins is undoubtedly Jamaica’s foremost playwright as his style of plays (called a Dramedy- Drama/Comedy) with hits like ‘Hot Spot’, ‘Gift for Mom” ‘Feminine Justice’ have not only won awards every year but consistently play to enthusiastic sold out audiences in Jamaica, USA and the Caribbean.

“Uptown Bangarang” is another hit as it was nominated for six Actor Boy awards from the International Theatre Institute ( ITI ) and won the Best Comedy and Best Supporting Actor awards. It has also played to sold out audiences in Miami and Coral Springs during the Mothers’ Day weekend this year.

Directed by internationally acclaimed theatre and film actor, director Jeffrey Anderson Gunter.

Uptown Bangarang tells the story of a Jamaican middle class family in crisis. The father is a successful Televangelist with plans of going into politics who tries to grapple with a wife suffering from post traumatic stress disorder having been robbed and “nearly raped”, an adolescent son who is uncertain of his sexual preference but who is intent on being nothing but a dance hall DJ despite his father’ dislike. To further complicate things there is Precious the family’s young, attractive, cunning and street savvy helper from the ghetto who will stop at nothing to benefit herself financially and socially from the discord in the family. With most of the dialogue in Standard English this is a play that can be enjoyed by all and is the ideal opportunity to invite your non-Jamaican friends to a quality production you can be proud of.

“Uptown Bangarang” stars a talented group of young thespians like award winning actress Ruth Hoshing, Maylynne Walton (American Academy of Dramatic Arts), Andrew Lawrence (from Father HoLung) , Sakina (from Jamaica Music Theatre), Jerry Benswick, 2 time Actor Boy award winner Maurice Bryan and Max Woodham, winner of the Best Supporting Actor for his role as the son Abe in this production.
