Barbados Labour Ministry expanding services for job seekers

BARBADOS – Barbados Ministry of Labour and the Civil Service is adopting a number of strategies aimed at further assisting prospective employees.

This was revealed this morning by Minister, Rawle Eastmond, who explained that as part of this process, the Manpower, Research and Statistical Unit of his Ministry would be updating its Barbados Standard Occupational Classifications to provide a database of all available occupations in Barbados.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the inaugural Career Development Seminar at the Queen’s College Auditorium, he added that this update would be ongoing as new occupations and opportunities emerged under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy’s provision for the free movement of skilled labour in the region.

“The information (in the classification) will consist of a definition of occupations, the required skills and competencies for each job, individual tasks and duties, qualifications and requisite worker traits,” Mr. Eastmond noted.

In addition, the Labour Minister told participants that his Ministry would be reintroducing its Career Guidance Manual and updating its website to better serve the needs of job seekers.

“The proposed new site will be enhanced to include a much wider range of occupations across all job categories, job opportunities, career guidance services and training offered by public sector agencies, profiles of all educational training institutions, labour information in relation to employment rights and occupational safety and health and the Career Guidance Manual,” the Minister explained.

He pointed out that the National Employment Bureau (NEB) would also be expanding its employment guidance programmes through its participation in career showcases, school career days and world of work programmes.

The two-day Career Development Seminar at Queen’s College is coordinated by the Academy for Career Development in association with the Ministry of Labour and the Civil Service.
