Barbados employers urged to take lead in fight against HIV/AIDS discrimination

BARBADOS – The Barbados Labor Department of the Ministry of Labor and the Civil Service is calling on employers to share critical information with their employees in an effort to fight the discrimination and stigmatisation of persons living with HIV/AIDS.

According to Barbados Labour Officer, Wayne Sobers, HIV/AIDS is one of the most serious issues impacting the workplace and he called on employers to be in the vanguard of efforts to combat this disease.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the Labor Department’s seminar on “Reducing Conflict, Enhancing Productivity” at the National Union of Public Workers Auditorium today, he told participants to make good use of the information garnered from the workshop to empower their colleagues and employees.

“The latest statistics on HIV/AIDS show that one person is affected about every 30 hours and we all have a role to play, because we spend more time at work than any other place,” Mr. Sobers said.

The seminars are part of the Ministry of Labor’s efforts to keep employers, employees and other key stakeholders abreast of pertinent legislative issues.

The workshops look at critical labor legislation including the Holiday with Pay Act, the Shops Act, the Protection of Wages Act and the Employment of Women (Maternity Leave Act) among many others.
