Antigua’s Government builds its defense against the Stanford Victims Coalition

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Antigua’s Government continues to build its defense against a law suit brought by the Stanford Victims Coalition which is seeking to recover financial losses as a result of the Stanford debacle.

Attorney General Justin Simon says government has instructed its lawyers from Texas who had recently been in Antigua.

The Stanford Victims Coalition is alleging that government has benefited from Stanford’s investments and on that basis should compensate the members for their losses.

According to Simon, Government is looking at whether that action is sustainable against a sovereign state and the whole issue as to whether or not there was a commercial enterprise in which the government participated with Stanford would first of all have to be established.

The Attorney General reiterates that there were very few actual engagements between Stanford and the UPP administration and it is hoped that with the information given to the lawyers the matter against the State would be dismissed.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General says in the other matter where a group of investors is filing suit in relation to the take-over of the Bank of Antigua, no papers have been served.
