American Nursing Students Intern at Polyclinics in Barbados

BARBADOS – For the next two weeks, eight nursing students of the Duke University in North Carolina, United States of America (USA) will be attached to the Winston Scott and Randal Phillips Polyclinics, through a partnership with the Barbados Community College (BCC).

The internship, which began with an orientation at the College’s conference room on Monday, is a requirement for the students, who are pursuing the Registered Nursing qualification. Topics discussed at the orientation included Community Health Nursing in Barbados, the History of Barbados and links to the USA.

BCC Principal, Dr. Gladstone Best, said that the partnership meant a lot to the institution, since nursing students of other countries “get the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the Barbadian primary health care system”.

Assistant Nursing Professor with Duke University, Kathy Trotter, said she was looking forward to ‘the learning experience’ on public health in Barbados and hoped the students would have several opportunities to provide their services and learn the culture.

Previously, the BCC Nursing Division hosted students from Kingston University in England and George Mason University in the United States.
