American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) Ball to benefit health and education programs in Jamaica
MIAMI – The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) will hold its annual fundraising Peacock Ball on Saturday (May 22) at the Biltmore Hotel in Miami, proceeds of which will go towards social programmes in Jamaica including healthcare, education and humanitarian and economic development.
The Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) will be presented with the AFJ’s Humming Bird Award for International Achievement 2010 for exemplary contributions to the island in the areas of philanthropy, education and economic development.
As the AFJ aims to raise funds to assist with development needs in Jamaica, the event is expected to offer an evening of dining and entertainment as well as an auction of items including luxurious vacation packages, artwork and fine jewelry.
Jamaica National Building Society was established in 1867 to help Jamaicans realize their dreams of owning their own home. Today, JNBS is one of the island’s largest financial institutions offering a blend of financial services and mortgage plans to customers living in Jamaica and across the Diaspora in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Cayman Islands.
Over the years, the JNBS has continued to assist charities and support projects in Jamaica and its Diaspora primarily in the areas of education, philanthropy and economic development.
Recipients of the prestigious award over the years, have included individuals and corporations, locally and internationally, namely the Founder of the Missionaries of the Poor, Father Richard HoLung; Phillip Gore of Gore Developments and Tennis Jamaica; Tony Hart of Hart Investments; entertainment mogul and Island Post founder, Chris Blackwell; Chairman of the Gleaner Company, Oliver Clarke, OJ; founder of St. Patrick’s Foundation, Monsignor Richard Albert ; Food for the Poor and Royal Caribbean Cruises.
