Air Jamaica Suspends St. Lucia Service

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Air Jamaica is suspending its current thrice weekly service to the island of St. Lucia, effective April 1, 2008.

Paul Pennicook, Air Jamaica’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales, explained that the carrier was forced to make the difficult decision because of its corporate restructuring, which entails streamlining and route rationalization.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have to suspend the St. Lucia service from both New York and Jamaica,” said Pennicook who explained that the decision is part of a new mandate from Kingston for Air Jamaica to become a leaner, more viable national carrier.

“We’re grateful for Air Jamaica’s support for our tourism development over the years,” said Senator Allen Chastanet, St. Lucia’s Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation who wished the airline, the government and people of Jamaica the very best during this hard period of restructuring.

“Air Jamaica has done St. Lucia and the Caribbean proud with its commitment to excellence even during the tough aviation climate we are all experiencing. Our hearts are with the staff and management in these trying times and we look forward to the day when St. Lucians can welcome this world class carrier back to our shores.”

Senator Chastanet added that recently launched and planned non-stop services from the United States would help fill Air Jamaica’s void for St. Lucia’s economy.
