Yap Foo Dominates Jamaica Skeet Shoot Competition

Stiff Competition at JNGI Sporting Clays 2016 Skeet Shoot

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Robert Yap Foo emerged the clear winner of the JNGI 100 Sporting Clays competition at the Jamaica Skeet Club (JSC) event in Portmore on April 30.

The High Overall Champion, Mr. Yap Foo shot 88 out of 100 clay targets, said Khaleel Azan, President, JSC. This on an outstanding course that proved to be tricky and challenging in the windy conditions.

“Robert outclassed every skeet shooter to win by 5 clear points ahead of in form Runner Up Brett Thwaites,” Mr. Azan said. The Runner Up shot 83, using a Kolar 12 gauge shotgun for the first time.

“This is our 5th Sporting Clay event in 2016 and we have had 5 different champions indicating that our National Championship will go down to the wire,” the JSC President said. “The standard of skeet shooting is definitely improving throughout all the classes.”

“It was a good day for me,” Mr. Yap Foo said. Shooting, he added, “is a mental game, and you have to stay focused to shoot well.”

Chris Hind, General Manager of JN General Insurance Company, said his company became interested in sporting clays shooting as a fast growing and family friendly sport. He told the shooters at the end of the competition that, “I am making a commitment to be back next year to support this competition.”

One of the leading shooters in the competition, Craig Simpson, emerged as the Class A winner with a score of 82, putting him ahead of runner-up Joey Chin and Jeffrey Ziadie.

Jeffrey Panton took top spot in the B Class with a score of 73, putting him ahead of Marc Barnes and Kurt Waul.

Nicholas Benjamin was in exceptional form for C class, scoring 82, which placed him well ahead of Mark Desnoes, who shot 71; and Shaun Barnes 68. Mr Ziadie predicted, “In two years Nicholas will be a champion.”

Discussing his performance, Shaun Barnes said, “I did well on some stations but lost focus on others. It was difficult getting ahead.”

The D class winner was the much improved Dominic Simpson with a score of 65, ahead of Omar Francis and Brian Richardson.

Steven Chan Pong led the E class with a score of 73, followed by  Steven James and Gordon Kirk Lalah.

In the Ladies competition, Renee Rickhi, 62, emerged ahead of Wendy McMaster and Isabelle Chin.

Renee Rickhi also topped the Hunter Class with her score, putting her ahead of Nikolai Azan and Mathew Sale.

The Juniors were led by Peter Mahfood, 67, ahead of Diallo Richardson and Liam Johnson. Mr Mahfood, 16, said, “I had fun.”

Twelve-year old Mark Desnoes not only participated in E Class but also dominated the Sub Juniors category with his score of 71, putting him ahead of John Chin and Nikolai Azan.
